What are Hemorrhoids?
The term hemorrhoids refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids may result from straining when having a bowel movement. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea. Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external). Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening.
What are the Symptoms of Hemorrhoids?
Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl. However, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritated and painful. This is known as a protruding hemorrhoid.
Symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.
In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching.
How common are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of the population have hemorrhoids by age 50. Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women. The pressure of the fetus in the abdomen, as well as hormonal changes, cause the hemorrhoidal vessels to enlarge. These vessels are also placed under severe pressure during childbirth. For most women, however, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are a temporary problem.
Home Remedy for Hemorrhoids
Julie nurses at Wildwood Hospital. “A man arrived at the clinic with very painful and bleeding hemorrhoids. One was external and larger than half an inch and had a central ulcer. He had been suffering for a week. The doctor prescribed several things, including a Sitz bath, topical ice, and a mixture of various herbal teas applied externally as a douche. But, the man was convinced it was the charcoal paste that had brought him the most dramatic relief. The nurses mixed one teaspoon of activated charcoal powder with two tablespoons of olive oil to make a paste. This was applied to the rectal area overnight. Three days later the external hemorrhoid had significantly decreased in size, and there was no more pain. The bleeding had also all but stopped.”
He returned home with instructions to continue the treatment. He was also instructed on how to improve his bowel health with regularity, increased water intake, exercise, and a diet higher in natural fiber.
After hearing this story, I decided to check out the web. I was pleasantly surprised to find a relatively new product that apparently has been nationally advertised as a one-time application for relieving hemorrhoidal discomfort. The label reads: “Helps relieve these local symptoms associated with hemorrhoids: pain, itch, burning, soreness, discomfort.”
The main active ingredient listed is activated charcoal (31.7%). It is described as a cream, but comes more like a paste and is used intrarectally, or can be applied externally. The website allowed people to write in and tell about their experiences. Of the thirteen who had responded, ten gave the product a five out of five score, and three gave it a one out of five score. The only objection those gave who did not like it, was that it was difficult to apply. Here are a couple of the positive remarks:“I agree with the FIVE star rating (and if there were six stars then I would give six). Not that I want to say anything negative about other brands, it’s just that this one is in a league of its own. I have been using hemorrhoid products over and over again since I had my daughter and I have been waiting for a one-application treatment for so long. It’s great to be able to think of something else than hemorrhoids for a while. The next time they come around, I have a date with Product X! Thanks!” Kelly. “I usually never take the time to write these things, but this is one time I just have to give you my opinion. I have never found a hemorrhoid product that comes CLOSE to Product X!! I had seen a TV commercial about it and so I thought I would try it, boy am I happy now! The itch and burning is gone, exactly like it says. This really is the ONLY one-application treatment. The next time I have hemorrhoids, I know where I will find my solution. Many thanks Product X.” Javier.
But remember, as nurse Julie described, you can experiment making your own paste with charcoal powder and olive oil.
